Last week’s GOP debate had the same runtime as the second Lord of the Rings film. Like The Two Towers, Carly Fiorina not only took the battle to Helm’s Deep and wounded an Orc, she won the night.
At the end of the debate’s first hour, moderator Jake Tapper asked the former Hewlett-Packard CEO about negative comments fellow candidate Donald Trump made about her physical appearance to Rolling Stone.
“I think women all over this country heard very clearly what Mr. Trump said,” she responded, receiving the night’s biggest applause line.
In one of the first CNN/ORC polls since the debate, Fiorina skyrocketed to second place with 15% (she was previously at just 3%). Although Trump maintained his first place status, he experienced his first significant drop (8%) in the polls.
However, Trump isn’t the only resident of Mordor that Fiorina shot with an arrow.
Speaking on Planned Parenthood (a subject that consumed more time than the economy, climate change and the never-mentioned Black Lives Matter movement), Fiorina seemingly stole the issue from Mike Huckabee and Ted Cruz, making it her own.
Discussing the debunked Planned Parenthood tapes, Fiorina challenged President Obama and candidate Hillary Clinton to “Watch a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking while someone says, ‘We have to keep it alive to harvest its brain.’ This is about the character of our nation, and if we will not stand up and force President Obama to veto this bill, shame on us.”
Fiorina’s veto is referencing federal funding for Planned Parenthood. However, the Hyde Amendment already prevents Planned Parenthood from using those funds for abortion procedures.
As for the video of which Fiorina speaks, it’s bullshit.
Having watched the video (these guys use more footage than Terrence Malick), the anti-abortion group Center for Medical Progress simply added the audio track of former tissue procurement technician Holly O’Donnell, over unrelated stock footage of a fetus on an examination table.
Politifact rated Fiorina’s claim as “Mostly False” and adds “there’s nothing else in the video to corroborate O’Donnell’s story. Additionally, the supervisor in O’Donell’s story does not say anything about keeping the fetus alive specifically for the purpose of harvesting the brain.”
By ending federal funding for Planned Parenthood, you essentially prohibit the organization from offering contraception, pap tests, breast exams, UTI treatments, family practice services, and STD tests & treatments, among other services for women AND men.
Taking on foreign policy, Fiorina explained how she would handle Russia as Commander in Chief:
“Having met Vladimir Putin, I wouldn’t talk to him at all. We’ve talked way too much to him.”
It was talking to Putin that led to Russia negotiating the removal of Syria’s chemical weapons.
Although she wouldn’t talk to him, Fiorina did have a list on how she would use the armed forces to essentially intimidate Russia:
- “Begin rebuilding the Sixth Fleet.”
- “Conduct regular, aggressive military exercises in the Baltic States.”
- “Send a few thousand more troops into Germany.”
The U.S. Sixth Fleet is based out of Europe and still active, which makes her first order of business incredibly strange. Go friend request them on Facebook, Carly.
Regarding expanding our military presence in the Baltic region, President Obama had already announced plans to do so. I wouldn’t trust Fiorina to bring the beer, because she is late to the party.
As of 2011, we had over 50,000 troops stationed in Germany. How many more does she want?
It is a true feat to make one of the more outlandish comments of the night when you are sharing the stage with Mike Huckabee and Ted Cruz, but Carly did just that:
“I’d like to link these two issues, both of which are incredibly important, Iran and Planned Parenthood.”
Carly explains how Iran involves the “defense of security of the nation,” while Planned Parenthood has to do with the “defense of the character of this nation.”
She might as well be trying to snap a lego onto a horse, because it makes the same amount of sense.
When discussing immigration, Fiorina lashed out at President Obama, stating he “could have chosen to do anything to solve this problem. Instead, he chose to do nothing. Why? Because the Democrats don’t want this issue solved.”
Carly must read the same newspapers as Sarah Palin.
In 2012, the Obama administration introduced the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy. It is a two-year deferment program for undocumented immigrant children who lived in the United States for five continuous years or entered the country before their 16th birthday.
Through executive action in 2014, Obama extended the policy to include immigrants who arrived in the United States before 2010 and under the age of 16, or arrived before 2010 and have a child who is a legal resident or US citizen.
The President also supported the Gang of Eight’s bi-partisan 2013 immigration reform bill, passed by the Senate. The legislation was killed by House Republicans.
It is undeniable how poised and confident Fiorina sounded in every word she spoke last Wednesday night.
The former advisor to John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign not only proved she could stand her ground alongside her male counterparts, she also proved she is just as unfit for the office of President.
