Is there a more definitive image of an irreparably broken GOP than watching members of the base calling for the hanging of Republican Vice President Mike Pence as they stormed the U.S. Capitol (where Pence was presiding over the electoral count)? It seems like a pretty strong contender.

After years of Donald Trump undermining our democracy with the enabling of the Republican Party and conservative media (including Fox News) providing the platform for their lies, last Wednesday’s attempted coup was the inevitable culmination.

Charleston

On June 17, 21 year-old Dylann Storm Roof entered the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, and committed the most violent racially motivated attack in the U.S. since the Civil Rights Movement. Using a .45 caliber handgun, the caucasian Roof killed nine and wounded a tenth.  All of the victims were black.

“I believe this is a hate crime,” Police Chief Greg Mullen told reporters at a press conference the night of the shooting.

Fox News chose to report the massacre the following morning from a different perspective.

Cliffhanger

There hasn’t been a bigger dick-measuring contest in Washington since the raising of the debt ceiling last year when it comes to the fiscal cliff.

The start of 2013 will see an end of the Bush tax cuts for all incomes, a lapse  in the AMT patch and the beginning of spending cuts under the Budget Control Act of 2011, a combination that many believe could put the nation back into a recession unless action is taken now.
