The Longest Week

It’s been a busy week! Trump swept all five primary states on Tuesday. Ted Cruz made a Hail Mary VP selection in Carly Fiorina, and Bernie Sanders claimed he still had a pathway to the Democratic nomination. How appropriate that the week ended in a night of jokes at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner.

Dick Tracy

The CNN/Telemundo debate was an all-out wrestling event that at times saw moderator Wolf Blitzer lose complete control of the situation. Last week’s Michigan debate saw frontrunner Donald Trump take it from a cage match to a literal dick measuring contest.

Fight Club

Last Thursday’s tenth GOP presidential debate felt like a WWE SummerSlam event. By the halfway point, I wouldn’t have been surprised if Donald Trump had walked off stage and tagged Chris Christie to come out and slam a folding chair against Marco Rubio.

Night of the Comet

Governor Nikki Haley’s GOP response to this year’s State of the Union was a reminder hers is the party of “personal responsibility.” This is a mantra that has felt at times abandoned by its representatives; seemingly replaced with “Thanks, Obama.”

There was no mention of bread bags or desperately drinking from a water bottle as if she were a rescued castaway off “Gilligan’s Island.” This was the best GOP response in years.

(Planned) Parenthood

Since July, the GOP has been parroting the lie that Planned Parenthood has sold the body parts of aborted babies for profit. Based on debunked undercover videos from anti-abortion group the Center for Medical Progress, the Republican-controlled House even went as far to open an investigation against the healthcare provider (predictably finding no misuse of federal funding).

Now the rhetoric from the right is proving to have truly disastrous consequences.

The Wild Bunch

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus referred to last week’s CNBC debate as “a series of ‘gotcha’ questions, petty and meanspirited in tone, and designed to embarrass our candidates,” in a letter to Chairman of NBC News, Andrew Lack.

The RNC criticism against CNBC distracts from the real issue: the questions weren’t the problem, the answers were.

The Great Debaters

Following the August 6th Republican debate, Donald Trump attacked moderator Megyn Kelly in the media, sounding more like the drunk guy struggling to steady himself at last call rather than a presidential candidate.

“There was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her… wherever,” Trump told CNN’s Don Lemon.

Jurassic World

Donald Trump’s questioning of Sen. John McCain’s status as a war hero was the foremost comment to reach the national media from last weekend’s Family Leadership Summit, which is unfortunate. A listen of the other attending GOP presidential candidates’ speeches quickly revealed policies and world views so outdated they should be displayed next to the dilophosaurus pen in Jurassic Park.

Marco Polo

“While our people and economy are pushing the boundaries of the 21st century, too many of our leaders and their ideas are stuck in the 20th century,” Florida Senator Marco Rubio told supporters during his presidential campaign announcement earlier this month. Rubio might as well consider himself among those leaders trapped in time.
