Session 9

On Thursday, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons became a trending topic on social media due to an online poll the organization conducted concerning Hillary Clinton’s health.

71% of 250 physicians found Clinton’s current condition to be potentially “disqualifying for the position of President,” according to the poll’s results. Wait, who the fuck is this group?

Created in 1943 as a conservative counter to the American Medical Association, the AAPS is essentially the comments section of Alex Jones’ InfoWars with medical degrees.

Last Friday, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick remained seated as the national anthem played prior to a game, in protest of the bias against minorities within our criminal justice system.

While conservative pundits and even the GOP presidential candidate suggested Kaepernick should find a new country to call home, the twenty-eight year old’s decision is actually the most American one could make.

White Man’s Burden

Days after announcing Breitbart News’ executive chairman and racial opportunist Steve Bannon as his new campaign CEO, Donald Trump reached out to the black community at a rally in Dimondale, Michigan:

“You’re living in poverty, your schools are no good, you have no jobs, 58% of your youth is unemployed — what the hell do you have to lose?”

A lot, actually.

Divergent

On Sunday, GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump vented his frustration with the media when he tweeted this (mis)understanding of the Constitution:

Of course, any fourth grader could tell you it is “freedom of the press” which allows the media to publish and broadcast what they wish. What’s truly sad is that this isn’t the first time Trump has shown he doesn’t understand the First Amendment.

Donald and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

“The Republican nominee is unfit to serve as president,” President Obama told the press during a White House news conference last week. “He keeps on proving it.”

GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump continued to attack a Gold Star family, insinuated the general election may be rigged, advised Americans against keeping their 401(k) funds in the stock market and the solution he gave to victims of workplace sexual harassment was “find another career.”

This was only Tuesday.

E-mails!  Wasserman Schultz!  Rigged! No, these aren’t safety words in a Conservative bondage club.  These are the headlines and opinions in the media on the first day of the Democratic National Convention… and judging from the social media posts, they are in desperate need of context.

Dark City

After a chaotic start to the Republican National Convention, Donald Trump officially became the GOP candidate for President last Tuesday.  Conservatives such as GOP strategist Ana Navarro were quick to celebrate the historic moment:  “Tonight, a part of me feels like my puppy died.”

Which is how I felt by the end of Trump’s acceptance speech on Thursday night.

A Night at the Opera

Between Trump’s campaign chairman lashing out against the Bush family, the #NeverTrump movement initiating a floor fight and the night ending in a controversy of plagiarism, the opening day of the Republican National Convention did not disappoint.

Lone Star

Last Tuesday, 37 year-old Alton Sterling, a black male, was shot point blank by two Baton Rouge police officers while being pinned to the ground. Twenty-four hours later, Philando Castile, also a black male, was shot to death by police during a routine traffic stop. The aftermath of the shooting was live streamed on Facebook by Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond “Lavish” Reynolds, who was a passenger (along with her 4 year-old daughter) in the car when Castile was killed.

On Thursday night, five police officers were killed when a shooter ambushed a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas, Texas. Twelve officers and two civilians were also injured.

To say the country just ended a bad week would be one hell of an understatement.

Some Kind of Hate

“Although it’s still early in the investigation, we know enough to say that this was an act of terror and an act of hate,” President Obama told the country in his first remarks on this morning’s Orlando, Florida shooting.

At 2:02 AM on Sunday, a gunman opened fire in Pulse, a Florida gay nightclub, resulting in the deadliest mass shooting in American history.
