We recently passed the one-year anniversary of Drinks and Wings. My first piece, Culture Wars Episode One: The Conservative Menace, concerned Republican efforts to suppress women’s coverage and access to healthcare (including abortion). Here we go again… again.
There is a giant meteor heading straight for Earth, only this time there is no deep oil drill team led by Bruce Willis that can stop it. At least that is what you would think is happening judging from the reaction of the conservative right to the news of President Obama’s re-election.
We currently live in a world where the President receives accolades for making such an obvious statement as “Rape is rape.” Let that sink in for a moment. This is not an insult toward POTUS, but a testament to how clearly off the fucking rails the modern-day Republican Party has gone.
Like some of you, I have been volunteering registering people to vote during this election season. This involves mailings, phone banking and my personal favorite method, canvassing…which resulted in the exchange I had this past weekend.
Last Sunday, Missouri Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin said during an interview while discussing the issue of abortion “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”
Besides the fact that this is scientifically false, one of the most shocking aspects of this outlandish quote is that it’s far from the first time a Republican representative has said such a thing.
Yesterday, a Michigan committee from the Republican-led House passed an abortion bill that could drastically limit the healthcare rights of women. Déjà vu, anyone?
I literally take breaks from writing about all of the GOP-backed legislation against women’s healthcare because there are so many of them. I’m not kidding when I say that I could post a new entry every week on a different bill being written or going under a vote.
