The Mueller Report: Obstruction of Justice

After Attorney General Jeff Sessions notified the President that Robert Mueller had been appointed as Special Counsel, Trump responded in pearl-clutching fashion: “Oh my God. This is terrible. This is the end of my Presidency. I’m fucked.” I’m certain there is another timeline where Trump is only President in a Tommy Wiseau movie.

After reading The Mueller Report, I was convinced of two things: 1) as President, Donald Trump committed multiple acts of obstruction of justice and 2) that Congress should open an impeachment inquiry.

Crack open a cold one as I take at look at four instances when the leader of our nation obstructed justice!

The Russia House

On Friday, 800,000 federal employees missed their first paychecks under the government shutdown. The shutdown, a result of Trump’s Hans Gruber-like demand for $5.6 billion for his southern border wall (remember when he said Mexico would pay for this thing?), wasn’t the only bad news to drop on 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

The New York Times reported the FBI had opened an inquiry in 2017 (prior to the Mueller probe) to determine if the sitting U.S. president was knowingly (or unknowingly) a Russian asset working against American interests.  We’ve officially hit the President Logan season of 24.

Under Siege

With the release of former Trump transition team member Rep. Devin Nunes’ memo, President Trump and House Republicans intensified their attacks against our nation’s institutions as if they were attempting to breach the fortress of Hornburg in the battle of Helm’s Deep.

Nunes, the Chair of the House Intelligence Committee, previously won the heart of the Trump White House last March when he revealed intel allegedly showing the Trump campaign had been (unjustly) under surveillance (which it didn’t). It would later be revealed Nunes received his “evidence” from the Trump White House itself. Since the election, Nunes has proven to be Trump’s most loyal subordinate… the Wormtongue of Congress.

Two Weeks Notice

How bad have the last two weeks been for the Trump administration? Even if zero evidence of collusion is found between Donald Trump and Russia regarding the 2016 election, he could still find himself between a rock and a hard place. Or as one senior official told The Daily Beast: “I don’t see how Trump isn’t completely fucked.”

The Ugly Truth

I first saw the news on social media of James Comey’s termination as FBI Director on Tuesday afternoon. I thought it was a joke, much like Comey himself did when he learned of the end of his tenure… on television.

Trump’s latest action may be his most devastating yet. The 45th President has undermined the fourth estate, attacked the judicial branch and is now destroying the integrity of the very law enforcement agency investigating him.

The only thing more preposterous than Comey’s firing is the White House’s reasoning behind it.

Nusies

President Trump’s claim of former President Barack Obama wiretapping Trump Tower during the 2016 campaign is about as believable as Reince Priebus’ head exploding from mixing Pop Rocks and Coke. However, Priebus having his own Scanners moment at some point over the next four years is not only more realistic; but likely.

You’ve Got Mail

On Friday, FBI Director James Comey notified Congress of newly discovered e-mails in a separate case which may be “pertinent” to the Clinton e-mail investigation.

Many outlets reported this as a re-opening (a term the FBI has not used) of the Clinton case while Donald Trump himself responded Clinton’s corruption “is on a scale that we’ve never seen before.”

The reality is: this latest “revelation” is likely absolutely nothing.
