It’s disappointing that Marco Rubio’s water bottle grab is the most memorable moment from his GOP response to the President’s State of the Union Address, because his rebuttal was an excellent showcase of how out of touch with reality the Republican Party still is.
The Crazies
When speaking with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell, journalist and gun owner Tom Brokaw agreed with retired Army Gen. Stan McChrystal that “assault weapons do not belong in a civil society.” Brokaw added: “The response to that was, ‘I have to keep my weapon because the government is going to come and try to take it away from me and I have to be able to fight back when that happens.’ That’s the most far-reaching thing you can possibly imagine.”
It’s easy to see why gun owners like Brokaw are overshadowed in the national debate when you have such circus acts as Alex Jones and James Yeager taking center stage.
Do the Right Thing
As the country continues to cope with last week’s horrific theatre shooting, the topic of gun control returns to the public spotlight.
Social media networks are incredible. Sites like Facebook and Twitter offer an outlet for people to voice their opinions on a wide-range of subjects in real time. If your feed read anything similar to mine, your wall was likely covered in posts by a combination of newly minted gun lobbyists and stricter gun control advocates.
