During a campaign stop last week in Virginia, President Obama spoke about how Americans are assisted or inspired by others on their journey to succeed. Or, if you follow the conservative media, the President simply said, “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that.”

Weird Science
Over recent years we have not only witnessed the Republican Party distance itself from proven science, but at times create its own fabricated version. In March, Republicans in the New Hampshire House of Representatives passed a bill requiring doctors to tell women that abortion causes breast cancer. Of course, this is simply not true.

Supporters of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act celebrated as the Supreme Court announced its decision to uphold a milestone of the Obama presidency.

This long overdue, common sense legislation has already benefited millions of Americans and will assist more as the Act’s provisions continue to go into effect.
Land of Confusion
Jeb Bush recently found himself in hot water like a crustacean at Red Lobster for saying former president Ronald Reagan would have a tough time being accepted by today’s Republican Party.
Bush took criticism from his own party for his comments, but he brought up an interesting point… that was dead on.

Last week, President Obama announced a new immigration policy that will benefit thousands of people. The policy allows illegal immigrants to file for a two-year deferral from deportation, with the possibility of renewal. The criteria for eligibility are:
- Under the age of 30 and arrived in the United States before the age of 16
- Have lived in the United States for five continuous years
- Individuals who do not have a criminal record
- Individuals who are successful students (High School Diploma or GED) or served in the military
Those that meet the requirements are also eligible to apply for work permits.

The GOP has been consistently blocking nearly all potential job growth legislation from the Obama administration. The most damaging block was the American Jobs Act, which, as we pointed out in the entry The One About the Pipeline, would have provided more jobs to the state of Iowa alone than the Keystone pipeline could provide for the nation.

Yesterday, a Michigan committee from the Republican-led House passed an abortion bill that could drastically limit the healthcare rights of women. Déjà vu, anyone?
I literally take breaks from writing about all of the GOP-backed legislation against women’s healthcare because there are so many of them. I’m not kidding when I say that I could post a new entry every week on a different bill being written or going under a vote.

Yesterday saw the Republicans block yet another bill that would have assisted the American public.
Sponsored by Senator Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, the Paycheck Fairness Act included the following:

Return of the Living Brain Dead
I can’t think of a single more embarrassing, ridiculous and infuriatingly stupid political conspiracy theory than that championed by the birthers.
The notion that our current president was not born in the United States has been debunked MULTIPLE times since 2008, yet members of the GOP continue to make it an issue 4 years later.
In the past few weeks we have seen the Iowa Republican Party’s platform committee chairman Don Racheter, Republican congressman Mike Coffman, Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett and Republican Band-Aid Donald Trump dig up the birther issue as if they were in a pet cemetery looking for Trump’s new hairpiece.
Raise the Roof
Last year’s raising of the debt ceiling was an unnecessary national media circus that showcased the thick-headed selfishness of the GOP and the lack of strong will among the Democratic Party.
A wave of Tea Party catering Republicans complicated the debt ceiling talks, refusing to accept any form of tax increase. Watching the GOP open themselves up to the manipulation of the Tea Party had me questioning whether I was watching CSPAN or Star Trek II.
