I hope you have a warranty on your bullshit detector, because it may break if you see Fox News’ coverage of President Obama’s latest Cabinet and Agency picks.

Gohmert Pyle

We have all witnessed someone posting memes on social media claiming President Obama is a Muslim, isn’t a United States citizen or whatever the latest conspiracy theory is that week against his administration. Have you ever wondered what it would be like if that same individual were a United States lawmaker? Meet Republican Representative Louie Gohmert.

The Town

Iowa Republican Senator Chuck Grassley seemingly dislikes any form of amnesty for illegal immigrants as much as Indiana Jones hates snakes.  This may explain why the Senator chose to link the Boston Marathon bombings with the latest immigration reform legislation last Friday.

Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot

“People seem to have this really, really evil impression of an AR-15…” Fox News’ Sean Hannity said in a recent interview with gun advocate, Sarah Merkle. Yes, Sean, people tend to have unpleasant opinions about a weapon recently used to kill 20 elementary school children. I know, it’s crazy.

The Way of the Gun

How much would it cost for you to ignore the deaths of 20 children?  For Senator Ted Cruz, it’s $10,150.00.  Comparatively, Utah Senator Mike Lee is a bargain at $2,500.00.  These are the amounts both men have most recently received from the National Rifle Association.  The two men, along with Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, sent a letter last month threatening to block any gun control legislation that they feel may threaten the Second Amendment.  However, none of the proposals discussed prohibit a sane, law-abiding citizen’s right to bear arms.

Groundhog Day

We recently passed the one-year anniversary of Drinks and Wings.  My first piece, Culture Wars Episode One: The Conservative Menace, concerned Republican efforts to suppress women’s coverage and access to healthcare (including abortion).  Here we go again… again.

Speed 2: Cruz Control

Texas Senator Ted Cruz recently made headlines this week when he sparred with fellow Senator Dianne Fienstein over her assault weapons ban legislation.

Cruz Hearing

Cruz questioned the constitutionality of the bill, completely unaware of the court cases that have established such a ban as clearly within the safety parameters of the Constitution.

Friday

History seems to be repeating itself in Washington, whether it is the debt ceiling, the fiscal cliff or now, the subject of sequestration.  I am predicting another last minute (poor) deal or extension to avoid drastic spending cuts from going into effect, but the real question is: why does this keep happening?

Waterworld

It’s disappointing that Marco Rubio’s water bottle grab is the most memorable moment from his GOP response to the President’s State of the Union Address, because his rebuttal was an excellent showcase of how out of touch with reality the Republican Party still is.

Mo’ Money

Last week, the nation watched as the President gave his first State of the Union Address of his second term.

Regular readers will know that I was a strong supporter of the President’s fully funded American Jobs Act.  I could not have been more pleased to hear the bill return to the spotlight during last Tuesday’s address.
